MARCH 3, 2003

The Board of Works and Safety met on the 3rd day of March 2003 at city hall at 5:30 p.m. Members present: Mr. Duane Roderick, Mr. Tom O’Connor, Mr. Deon Swift, and Mrs. Nancy Mitchell. Absent: Mrs. Kay Gustus.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Minutes of the February 18, 2003 meeting were approved as prepared on a motion by Mr. Roderick, seconded by Mayor Swift. All ayes.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Building Commissioner, Bunny Jordan, reported she had sent notices to Mr. Hoffa concerning several of his properties. She has tagged two of them—one on Fifth Street and one on Hollovy Street—for condemnation. She said she’s not certain if the house on Main Street can be repaired or not. Decisions on it have been postpone until Mr. Hoffa returns from Florida in April. She also has three more houses on her list to be checked at a later date.

Mr. O’Connor said he sent a notice to Mr. Chris Small to appear at today’s meeting. Since Mr. Small did not appear, Mr. O’Connor said Ms. Jordan may go ahead with her instructions to the city men to board up the broken window at 106 North Perry Street. Mr. O’Connor said the city is to keep a record of materials and time spent in labor and then a statement will be sent to Mr. Small.

OLD BUSINESS

Mr. O’Connor said he had sent a letter to Mr. Richard Stairs, owner of Lambert Trailer Court, informing him it was going to cost $1700 to remove the burned trailer. Mr. Stairs has until March 18, 2003 to respond.

CLAIMS

Claims in the amount of $55,512.93 as shown by the claims and allowance docket, were presented to the board. Mr. Roderick made a motion to pay the claims, seconded by Mayor Swift.

MISCELLANEOUS

Mr. Dave Huckleberry was present to make a request. He said presently the city was working on the water main on the corner of Monroe and College Streets. Water was running down the side of Monroe Street that had no curb or gutter; it was picking up dirt and debris and running it up on the sidewalk. He asked if in the future the city would direct the water to the gutter. Mayor Swift said he would take care of the matter.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business to be brought before the board, Mr. Roderick made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Mayor Swift.
