CITY OF ATTICA
BOARD OF WORKS AND SAFETY
MARCH 18, 2003
The Board of Works and Safety met on the 18th day of March 2003 at city hall at 5:30 p.m. Members present: Mr. Duane Roderick, Mrs. Kay Gustus, Mr. Tom O’Connor, Mr. Deon Swift, and Mrs. Nancy Mitchell.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes of the March 3, 2003 meeting were approved as prepared on a motion by Mr. Roderick, seconded by Mrs. Gustus. All ayes.
CITIZEN’S PETITIONS
Mr. Curt Phelps, owner of the Attica Motel, asked how the city franchise with the cable company worked. Mrs. Mitchell replied they gave the city a percentage of their monthly gross income. He wanted to know when our contract was renewed and for how long. Mayor Swift said we would have to check into it. Mr. Phelps requested support from the city in obtaining cable for the motel. He said the cable company wanted to charge him $15,000 to do it and he didn’t think it reasonable. He is willing to pay a fair portion and since the city seems to be growing in that direction he would appreciate their assistance. Mayor Swift said he thought it would be helpful to have Diane Powers, Area Manager of Insight, to be present at the next meeting.
DEPARTMENT HEADS
Mr. Ron Jean, Director of Public Works, reported the Water Project was going well. He also said after the project is finished and they know everything is working well, Brackney will return and finish parkways, etc.
Police Chief Gene Snoeberger stated his officers had begun writing parking tickets that day and also tagged a few cars in some problem areas.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Building Commissioner Bunny Jordan said she had tagged three Hoffa properties that need to be demolished. Mr. Hoffa did receive a notice these were problem properties. He is currently in Florida and will not return until the middle of April. She received a letter from Mr. Hoffa addressing these properties, which she gave to City Attorney Tom O’Connor. Meanwhile, no one can move into them and create more problems.
Chris Small did board up his property downtown. Mr. Small refused to paint the boards and Ms. Jordan told him if she received one complaint from anyone he would have to paint it. He assured her he would be ripping out that side and doing work on it the first of April.
Ms. Jordan said she had no information on the auction house.
Ms. Jordan said today was the deadline regarding destruction of the burned trailer in the Lambert Trailer Court. Mrs. Gustus made a motion to bring Mr. Taylor’s bid from the table and accept it, seconded by Mr. Roderick. All ayes.
CLAIMS
Claims in the amount of $92,736.74 as shown by the claims and allowance docket, were presented to the board. Mrs. Gustus made a motion to pay the claims, seconded by Mr. Roderick.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to be brought before the board, Mrs. Gustus made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Mr. Roderick. All ayes.
