CITY OF ATTICA

BOARD OF WORKS AND SAFETY

JANUARY 7, 2003

The Board of Works and Safety met on the 7th day of January 2003 at city hall at 5:30 p.m.  Members present:  Mr. Duane Roderick, Mrs. Kay Gustus, Mr. Tom O’Connor, Mr. Deon Swift, and Mrs. Nancy Mitchell.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Minutes of the special session held on December 27, 2002 were approved as prepared on a motion by Mrs. Gustus, seconded by Mr. Roderick.  All ayes.

CITIZEN’S PETITIONS

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Leasure, 404 South McDonald Street, petitioned the board for reimbursement of a septic problem and damage to their home.  They presented a copy of their homeowners insurance showing the five hundred dollar deductible.  Mr. Ron Jean, Director of Public Works, said the city sewer was plugged causing backup of sewage into the Leasure home.  Mrs. Gustus made a motion to pay their deductible, seconded by Mr. Roderick.  All ayes.  Motion carried.  Mayor Swift apologized to Mr. and Mrs. Leasure for the problem.

City Attorney Tom O’Connor informed the board that the city administration is probably going to the council and ask that they amend the sewer ordinance requiring people to have backflows installed to prevent this kind of probelm—to prevent sewage flowing back into their home.  This will especially address future construction of homes.

DEPARTMENT HEADS

Mayor Swift complimented Mr. Jean and his crew for the good job they did in cleaning the streets during the recent snowstorm.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Mr. O’Connor reported a legal notice to bidders for the demolition of the building located at 201 West Logan Street is being published in the newspaper.  Bids will be opened at the next regularly scheduled meeting on January 21, 2003.

CLAIMS

Claims, in the amount of $88,877.76 as shown by the claims and allowance docket, were presented to the board.  Mrs. Gustus made a motion to pay the claims, seconded by Mr. Roderick.  All ayes.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business to be brought before the board, Mrs. Gustus made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Mr. Roderick.  All ayes.
