CITY OF ATTICA
BOARD OF WORKS AND SAFETY
JULY 2, 2002
The Board of Works and Safety met on the 2nd day
of July 2002 at city hall at 5:30 p.m.
Members present: Mr. Duane
Roderick, Mr. Deon Swift, and Mrs. Nancy Mitchell. Absent: Mrs. Kay Gustus
and Mr. Tom O’Connor.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes of the regular session held on June 18, 2002 were
approved as prepared on a motion by Mr. Roderick, seconded by Mayor Swift.
DEPARTMENT HEADS
Fire Chief Ed O’Farrell informed the board that the pump on
Engine #13 had to be down graded to 750 gallons per minute from the regular
1,000 gallons per minute it has always been; it is wearing out. The recommendation from Midwest Fire Company
is to replace the wear rings and the impeller at a cost of $3,000 to
$5,000. It will be out of service for
about a week. Mr. Roderick made a
motion to repair the pump, seconded by Mayor Swift.
Police Chief Gene Snoeberger asked the board to consider for
the next calendar year of 2003 to establish a part time records clerk position
in his office; this would be a civilian position. It would be approximately fifteen hours a week and the pay rate
would be at the part-time clerical rate of $8.75; he said he estimated 780
hours a year. The type of work for this
position would include data entry computer work, filing, mailing crash reports
to insurance companies and the State Police.
This position would not alleviate him totally from all administrative
and clerical type duties he does, but it will give him a few hours a day,
leaving him available to work on investigations and patrolling. Chief Snoeberger said he knows the funding
is not a Board of Works issue, but he would like to have the consideration of
the board, then he would talk to the council.
NEW BUSINESS
Mayor Swift informed the board he had spoken with Fred
Martin of the Fountain-Warren Health Department. Mr. Martin recommended the city resume mosquito spraying; the
city will spray on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 P.M. to midnight.
CLAIMS
Claims in the amount of $87,359.76 as shown by the claims
and allowance docket, were presented to the board. Mr. Roderick made a motion to pay the claims, seconded by Mayor
Swift.
MISCELLANEOUS
Mayor Swift said the city had received a request from the
Attica Library to install a storm drain on Washington Street. The library will furnish all the materials
and the city will furnish the labor.
The finished project will also include parallel parking.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to be brought before the
board, Mr. Roderick made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Mayor Swift.
