JUNE 4, 2002

The Board of Works and Safety met on the 4th day of June 2002 at city hall at 5:30 p.m.  Members present:  Mr. Duane Roderick, Mrs. Kay Gustus, Mr. Tom O’Connor, Mr. Deon Swift, and Mrs. Nancy Mitchell.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

CITIZENS PETITIONS

Mr. Todd Wolfe, 801 Summit Street, was present and told the board that city employees had accidentally broken his sewer pipe while installing the water line on Summit Street.  This caused considerable damage to his home with sewage and water backing up into his basement.  It leaked in under his furnace and caused the motor to burn out twice.  The sewage line was plugged and has to be cleaned out.  Mr. Wolfe presented to the board $498.53 in bills and requested their approval for the city to pay them.  Mr. Roderick made a motion to pay the bills, seconded by Mrs. Gustus.  All ayes.

Mayor Swift swore in Mr. Kyle Askren as a new Reserve Police Officer and introduced him to the board and others present.

DEPARTMENT HEADS

Mr. Robert Smith, Director of Public Works, reported that the installation of the water line for Kentucky, Taylor, Hollovy, and North Streets had been completed that afternoon.  Mr. Smith measured with the flow meter at the Taylor and Kentucky hydrant and found it had increased by 500 gallons per minutes; Hollovy and North Streets increased from 170 gallons per minute to 400; and Waymire’s Apartments increased from 230 gallons per minute to 380.

Mr. Smith also announced the city had received the grant from the state for approximately $400,000 to fix all the low-pressure problems the city has.  He thanked the mayor, the clerk’s office and all those involved in working toward acquiring the grant.

Police Chief Snoeberger said the police car that was damaged by a drunk driver is currently in the body shop and hopefully he will receive it by the end of next week.

NEW BUSINESS

Building Commissioner Bunny Jordan reported she had sent notices to two homeowners to regarding burned out homes.  Mr. O’Connor had set a hearing at the next board meeting, June 18, with one homeowner to give them an opportunity to object with Ms. Jordan’s request to tear down the house.

CLAIMS

Claims in the amount of 487,223.12 as shown by the claims and allowance docket, were presented to the board.  Mrs. Gustus made a motion to pay the claims, seconded by Mr. Roderick.  All ayes.
