CITY OF ATTICA

BOARD OF WORKS AND SAFETY

APRIL 16, 2002

The Board of Works and Safety met on the 16th day of April 2002 at city hall at 5:30 p.m.  Members present:  Mrs. Kay Gustus, Mr. Duane Roderick, Mr. Tom O’Connor, Mr. Deon Swift, and Mrs. Nancy Mitchell.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Minutes of the regular session held on April 2, 2002 were approved as prepared on a motion by Mrs. Gustus, seconded by Mr. Roderick.  All ayes.

DEPARTMENT HEADS

Chief of Police Gene Snoeberger reported the department had tagged sixty-three junk vehicles and had physically hauled away three of them.  Thirty of the junk cars owners had taken care of the problem themselves and the thirty remaining vehicles are pending.  For the most part Chief Snoeberger felt the citizens were very cooperative.  A few people are unable to remove them for valid reasons, but the department is working with them.

Chief Snoeberger stated he had spoken with City Attorney Tom O’Connor regarding the roads in the trailer park.  Mr. O’Connor had sent the owner a letter concerning the issue.  Chief Snoeberger said the roads appear to have either been graded or the chuckholes have been filled with gravel.  While it’s still not the perfect roadway, it’s passable.

After discussion among board members, it was decided that the police department could begin citing citizens who had trash and refuse in their lawns.

Chief Snoeberger reported that an “Every 15 Minutes” program was going to be held at the Attica Junior/Senior High School.  The following day, convocation will be held with the students to discuss the events that occurred.

Chief Snoeberger said a Bike Safety Rodeo was going to be held at the elementary school on Saturday, May 18.  Some fund raising had been done in the community and the police department was trying to obtain enough to provide a bike safety helmet for each participant.  The school will hand out flyers to students and the police will put notices in the newspapers and on Channel 5 to let the public know about it.  Pamida has agreed to donate a bike to give away.

CLAIMS

Claims in the amount of $59,398.25 as shown by the claims and allowance docket, were presented to the board.  Mrs. Gustus made a motion to pay the claims, seconded by Mr. Roderick.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business to be brought before the board, Mrs. Gustus made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Mr. Roderick.
