BOARD OF WORKS AND SAFETY JUNE 19,2001
Members present: Mr. Roger Scheurich, Mrs. Kay Gustus, Mr. Deon Swift,
and Mrs. Nancy Mitchell. Absent: Mr. Tom O'Connor.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes of the regular session held on June 5,2001 were approved as
prepared on a motion by Mr. Scheurich, seconded by Mrs. Gustus.
DEPARTMENT HEADS
Mr. Robert Smith, Director of Public Works, reported that Mr. Harold Jenkins, a summer mower, had resigned. Mr. Orville Smith has been hired
to replace that position. Mr. Smith also reported that paving had been completed on Pike Street,
Kenny Freed Drive, and almost completed in Elmdale. He expected the yellow lines on Perry Street to
be done soon.
Mr. Ed O'Farrell, Fire Chief, stated that he was trying to contact
owners of vacant buildings in order to check on the condition of the buildings and to make them secure. He wants to make certain people cannot enter
these buildings and cause damage.
Mr.. Larry Grant, councilman, was present and spoke of concern about
the amount of books and magazines stored on the Stephens Auction building. Mr. O'Farrell said buildings in the city were being inspected
and owners would have to meet the fire codes.
CLAIMS
Claims, in the amount of $63,683.84 as shown by the claims and
allowance docket, were allowed and ordered paid on a motion by Mrs. Gustus, seconded by Mr. Scheurich. All ayes.
MISCELLANEOUS: Police Chief Gene Snoeberger said the police department
had been observing and citing traffic speeders on Perry Street.
Mayor Swift thanked Mr. Scheurich for being a member on the Board of
Works and wished him well in his coaching career.
Mayor Swift suggested the Board of Works meeting for July 3 be changed
to July 2,2001 due to the July 4th holiday. All present agreed upon the change.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to be brought before the board, the
motion
to adjourn was made by Mr. Scheurich, seconded by Mrs. Gustus. All
ayes.
